What is a cat??

What are cats besides little familiars that join us in our quests and daily rituals, you ask? They’re so much more than that—silent companions with an unspoken language, quiet protectors, and symbols of both comfort and mystery. There’s a reason they’ve become recurring elements in my designs, subtly woven into the details of my work.

In my adult life, I’ve had two incredible cats: Cece and Bruno. Cece, a beautiful black cat with an undeniable presence, was with me until last year when I lost her to feline leukemia—an illness as difficult to treat as it is to process emotionally. Her absence was profound, leaving a space that felt impossible to fill. Then, in October, I found Bruno through a neighborhood watch app. His grey and white coat, soft demeanor, and quiet companionship reminded me of the gentle power these creatures can bring into our lives. Both Cece and Bruno have shaped how I view connection, grief, and healing, and that impact naturally finds its way into my creative work.

Cats often symbolize independence, intuition, and quiet strength—qualities that resonate deeply with the themes I explore in my designs. Their presence feels like a reflection of personal growth, emotional depth, and a kind of unspoken rebellion against the need to constantly explain oneself. Much like the art I create, they carry a sense of mystery, moving with both elegance and defiance.

Including cats in my clothing is also a personal nod to the idea of protection. Historically, cats have been seen as spiritual guardians—familiars, symbols of luck, and even omens of guidance. Whether through embroidery, subtle motifs, or the influence of their fluid shapes, their presence in my work is a reminder of emotional resilience and personal connection.

There’s also something deeply personal about honoring the animals who have been part of my life. Cece and Bruno aren’t just memories; they’re part of my narrative. Featuring cats in my clothing allows me to share that story—one of love, loss, and the beauty of connection—without words.

And, of course, there’s just something undeniably captivating about them. Their elegance, their balance of softness and sharpness, the way they move—it’s all very in line with the ideas of duality and self-expression I often explore.

So, when you see a cat in my designs, it’s never just decorative. It’s a symbol of personal history, quiet strength, and the beauty of embracing your own complexity.

And don’t even get me started on bunnies…
